As a parent, your child’s safety is your number one priority. Whether you have a newborn baby or a busy toddler, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. Knowing what to do in those first few seconds of an emergency can make all the difference.
But when you look at a list of training options, it can be confusing. Do you need a “Level C” course? Should you take a “Standard” course?
In this guide, we will help you figure out exactly which first aid course parents need to feel confident and prepared.
What is the best course for parents?
For most parents in British Columbia, the best choice is either Emergency Child Care First Aid or a specialized Infant and Child CPR workshop.
- For Certification: Choose Emergency Child Care First Aid.
- For Just the Essentials: Choose Infant and Child CPR Basics.
1. Emergency Child Care First Aid (The Best All-Around Choice)
If you want to be fully prepared for anything, this is the course for you. While it is often taken by daycare workers, it is also perfect for parents and grandparents.
This course focuses specifically on babies (infants) and children. You will learn:
- How to handle life-threatening choking.
- CPR for small bodies.
- How to deal with common childhood illnesses like high fevers or allergic reactions.
- Wound care for scrapes and cuts.
It is an 8-hour course that gives you a 3-year certification. You can find this first aid course in Vancouver or Surrey easily on our schedule.
2. Infant and Child CPR Basics (For Busy Parents)
We know that parents are busy. If you don’t need a certificate for work and just want to know how to save your child’s life, we offer an Infant and Child CPR Basics workshop.
This session is shorter and focuses on the most “scary” moments for parents: Choking and CPR. It is a hands-on class where you can practice on mannequins until you feel comfortable. For more tips on this, check out our blog on CPR basics for parents.
3. Standard First Aid with CPR-C
If you need a first aid certificate that covers everything—including how to help other adults or coworkers—you should choose Standard First Aid with CPR-C.
This is a two-day course. It covers infants and children, but it also includes adult emergencies. This is the “gold standard” for general safety and is accepted by almost every employer in BC.
4. Why “Adult” First Aid isn’t enough for Parents
Many parents think that a general first aid course is enough. However, babies and toddlers are not just “small adults.” Their bodies work differently:
- Choking: The way you clear an airway for a baby is very different from an adult. You use back blows and chest thrusts instead of abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich maneuver).
- Breathing: Children are more likely to have breathing emergencies than heart attacks.
- Communication: A toddler can’t always tell you what is wrong or what they swallowed.
A child-focused course teaches you how to “read” a child’s symptoms when they can’t speak for themselves.
Key Skills Every Parent Should Know
When you join one of our classes, we focus on the skills that matter most for home life:
- The “Primary Survey”: How to quickly check if your child is breathing.
- Choking Rescue: Practice the exact hand positions for infants vs. toddlers.
- Allergies and Epi-Pens: How to recognize anaphylaxis and use an auto-injector.
- Head Injuries: Knowing when a bump on the head is a “stay at home” injury or a “go to the hospital” emergency.
Choosing the Right Location
We make it easy to get trained. We offer classes across the Lower Mainland, so you don’t have to travel far from home. You can book a first aid course in Surrey, Vancouver, Coquitlam, or Langley.

Final Thoughts
The best time to learn first aid is before you need it. Taking a few hours out of your weekend can give you a lifetime of peace of mind.
